Financing a car purchase in Rwanda on credit

In Rwanda, a car loan is usually granted by a commercial bank or a SACCO to an employee whose salary is paid into the account, based on a pro forma invoice, with the vehicle pledged to the lender until the last payment in Rwandan francs.

Rwanda's vehicle fleet

Landlocked Rwanda imports its vehicles through the ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. A large part of the market consists of used cars from Japan or Dubai, alongside Kigali dealerships that sell new models.

Bank loan for a new vehicle

For a new model sold by a Kigali dealer, the bank finances part of the price on presentation of a pro forma invoice. The deposit, term and rate depend on your profile and on the policy of Bank of Kigali, Equity or I&M.

Imported used cars and customs clearance

For an imported car, budget for the duties and taxes collected by the Rwanda Revenue Authority, often paid before the loan is released. Some banks finance the CIF price but not the taxes, which the buyer then covers from savings.

Pledge and registration in the lender's favour

The vehicle is registered with the RRA with an annotation in favour of the bank, which keeps a claim on the car. This pledge is lifted after the final payment, once a release letter has been sent to the authorities.

Employees, civil servants and SACCOs

Public servants and employees whose pay goes into a bank find it easier to get a car loan. Cooperatives such as Umwalimu SACCO and Zigama CSS also offer equipment loans to their teacher or military members.

Third-party and comprehensive cover in Rwanda

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory in Rwanda, and the bank usually demands comprehensive cover for the life of the loan. The annual cost depends on the vehicle's value, its use and the insurer chosen in Kigali.

Roadworthiness test and commercial use

Vehicles undergo the roadworthiness inspection run by the national police, a condition for driving that banks sometimes check. For a taxi, minibus or utility pick-up, the loan is closer to business finance and requires an operating plan.

Comparing with leasing

Companies and some self-employed people prefer to lease a vehicle with a purchase option rather than buy it on credit. The tax and ownership differences are explained on our page about car leasing in Rwanda.

Electric motorbikes and moto-taxis

In Kigali, many moto-taxi riders finance an electric motorbike through hire purchase with specialised operators, repaying daily by mobile money. This model differs from a standard bank loan and is also open to workers without a payslip.

Repayment capacity and salary domiciliation

Banks cap the share of income spent on instalments and add up existing loans reported to TransUnion Rwanda. If your budget is tight, a smaller personal loan in Rwanda can top up your savings without overloading your salary.

Comparing with the Kenyan market

Many vehicles pass through Kenya before reaching Rwanda, and banking practices are similar. To measure the gaps in deposit, term and rate between the two countries, see our guide to the car loan in Kenya.

Selling before the loan ends

Selling a car that is still pledged requires the bank's consent and repayment of the outstanding capital. Without a release, the buyer cannot transfer ownership with the RRA, which stalls the whole transaction.

How to get a car loan in Rwanda

  1. Choose the vehicle and get a pro forma invoice from the dealer or an estimate for an import.
  2. Work out RRA taxes, insurance and registration to know the total budget in Rwandan francs.
  3. Apply at the bank where your salary is paid, with supporting documents and the pro forma.
  4. Receive the offer, pay the deposit and take out the comprehensive insurance the lender requires.

Questions about buying a car on credit in Rwanda

Will the bank finance import taxes in Rwanda?

It depends on the lender. Some banks limit financing to the price of the vehicle, while others include part of the duties collected by the RRA. Ask explicitly before ordering, because these taxes often make up a large share of the cost.

Can I finance a used car bought from a private seller?

Some banks allow it, provided the vehicle is valued and insured and the transfer of ownership can be recorded in the buyer's name, with the lender's annotation, at the RRA.

Can a moto-taxi rider get financing?

Without a payslip, a standard bank loan is difficult. Hire purchase of electric motorbikes repaid by mobile money, and SACCO loans linked to a riders' cooperative, are the most common solutions in Kigali.

What happens if I repay my car loan early?

The contract usually sets out the terms for early repayment, with or without a penalty. Once the balance is settled, the bank issues a release that allows its annotation to be removed from the vehicle record.
