Buying a car on credit in Egypt: how it works
In Egypt, a new or nearly new used car is financed through a bank, an FRA-licensed auto finance company or directly at the dealership, with a down payment, comprehensive insurance and monthly instalments in Egyptian pounds.
A car market shaken by devaluation
Car prices in Egypt have risen sharply with the fall of the Egyptian pound and the 2022 import restrictions. Shortages even gave rise to the practice known as over price, a premium some sellers demand above the official list price.
Banks and finance subsidiaries
National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, CIB and QNB Egypt offer car loans to employees whose salary is paid into their account. Licensed companies such as Drive, linked to the GB group, or Contact also finance buyers directly at the dealership.
Locally assembled or imported vehicles
Factories in 6th of October and other industrial zones assemble several brands. Since 2019, the association agreement with the European Union has removed customs duties on cars of European origin, which affects prices and therefore the amount to finance.
Down payment and financed share
Lenders require a personal down payment whose level depends on the model, the age of the vehicle and the borrower's profile. The larger the down payment, the lower the instalment and the easier it becomes to access dealer promotions.
Mandatory comprehensive insurance
A financed vehicle must carry comprehensive insurance for the full term of the loan, with the lender as beneficiary. It comes on top of the compulsory third-party liability cover paid when renewing the vehicle licence at the traffic department.
The lien noted on the licence
Until the loan is fully repaid, the vehicle licence carries a restriction in favour of the bank or finance company. Selling the car therefore requires early repayment and a release document issued by the lender.
Nearly new used cars
Some banks finance used cars only a few years old, after an inspection. The used market in Cairo and Alexandria is busy, but the accident history and any fines must be checked with the traffic department before signing anything.
Advertised zero-interest deals
Some dealers advertise zero percent offers over a short term. The cost is often built into the vehicle price or hidden in extra fees, which is why it pays to compare the cash price with the total cost of the financing.
Murabaha car finance at Egyptian Islamic banks
Islamic banks and sharia-compliant windows offer murabaha: the bank buys the car and resells it to the borrower with a margin fixed at signing. Instalments stay constant even when CBE rates move up or down.
Car loan or leasing?
For business use, car leasing in Egypt, governed by Law 176 of 2018, is an alternative. Salaried individuals generally prefer a standard loan, which transfers ownership to them as soon as the car is registered.
A look across the border
In Libya, a car loan in Libya works within a very different banking system. In Egypt, assessment rests on the I-Score report and on a debt-to-income ratio capped by the CBE for all of a household's instalments.
Fuel, licence and day-to-day upkeep
Fuel, servicing, licence renewal and annual insurance all weigh on the budget. With petrol price increases decided by the pricing committee, it is wise to keep some headroom rather than choosing the highest instalment offered.
Financing your car in Egypt in six steps
- Choose the model and get an official pro forma invoice from an authorised dealer, checking that no undeclared over price premium is added.
- Compare the dealer's offer with those of the bank receiving your salary and of FRA-licensed finance companies.
- Submit your national ID, salary certificate, statements and pro forma for review of the file and an I-Score check.
- Pay the down payment and take out the required comprehensive insurance, naming the lender as beneficiary in case of total loss.
- Register the vehicle at the traffic department with the lender's restriction recorded on the licence.
- Repay every month, then request release of the restriction once the final instalment has been paid.
Budget for a financed car purchase in Egyptian pounds
| Item | Indicative value | What makes it vary |
|---|---|---|
| Initial down payment | Share of the price set by the lender | New or used, model, profile |
| Rate or margin | Depends on the bank and CBE rates | Manufacturer promotion, murabaha, term |
| Comprehensive insurance | Annual percentage of the value | Vehicle value, driver's age |
| Arrangement fee | Set by the lender | Dealer channel or bank branch |
| Licence and compulsory insurance | Traffic department scale | Engine size and model year |
Paperwork for an Egyptian car loan
- Valid national ID card
- Egyptian driving licence
- Salary certificate and bank statements for recent months
- Dealer pro forma or sale contract for the used vehicle
- Recent electricity bill as proof of address
- Commercial register and tax card for a self-employed borrower
Costly mistakes when buying a car on credit
- Paying an over price premium in cash without a receipt: the lender will not finance it and it appears nowhere in the sale contract.
- Picking the longest term to cut the instalment without working out the total cost, even though the car loses value quickly.
- Buying a used vehicle without checking unpaid fines and existing restrictions with the traffic department.
- Answering a no-deposit car loan advert on social media and paying fees to an unknown middleman.
Egyptian car finance: points that often come up
Can you finance a car without transferring your salary?
Some FRA-licensed finance companies accept customers without a salary transfer, in exchange for more detailed proof of income or even guarantee cheques. Banks keep their best terms for customers whose salary lands in their account every month.
Is a car imported from Europe cheaper to finance?
The customs duty exemption for vehicles of European origin lowers their price compared with equivalent non-European models. The amount borrowed can therefore be smaller, but other taxes and the foreign currency value still weigh on the final bill.
What happens to the loan if the car is stolen?
Comprehensive insurance pays out on the claim, and the money first goes to repay the capital owed to the lender named as beneficiary. Any remaining balance goes to the borrower under the terms of the insurance policy.
Do resident foreigners have access to car loans?
Some banks accept expatriates holding a residence permit and employed by a local company, with a loan term matched to the validity of the permit. Conditions vary a great deal from one institution to another.
