Leasing a vehicle with a purchase option in Egypt

In Egypt, car leasing is a financial lease governed by Law 176 of 2018 and the FRA: the leasing company buys the vehicle, rents it for several years to a business or an individual, then transfers it at the agreed residual value.

What Law 176 of 2018 provides

This law brought together the rules on financial leasing and factoring and placed both activities under FRA supervision. Lease contracts must be entered in a dedicated register, which protects the leasing company's ownership of the vehicle.

Leasing companies active in Egypt

GB Lease, Corplease, Incolease and bank subsidiaries such as those of NBE or QNB are among the market players. All of them must be licensed by the FRA, which publishes their list and handles complaints from customers.

Company fleets and commercial vehicles

Distribution, logistics and transport service companies in Cairo lease vans, minibuses and company cars. Leasing avoids tying up equity at a time when vehicle prices have risen sharply across the Egyptian market.

Tax advantage for businesses

Lease rentals are generally deductible from a company's taxable profit, subject to the applicable tax rules. This advantage explains why companies prefer leasing over a standard loan when they need vehicles for their operations.

Leasing for individuals

Some companies also offer leasing to well-off individuals, but a car loan in Egypt remains the most common option for households. With a lease, the car stays the property of the lessor until the purchase option is exercised.

Sale and leaseback to free up cash

Sale and leaseback lets a company sell its vehicles to a leasing company and then lease them back. The transaction turns an existing fleet into cash, which is useful after a period of strain on working capital.

Insurance and maintenance under a lease

The vehicle must carry comprehensive insurance in the lessor's favour. Depending on the contract, maintenance is either the lessee's responsibility or included in a full-service rental, a common formula for large fleets.

Islamic leasing, or ijara

Islamic banks offer ijara muntahia bittamleek, a lease that ends with the transfer of ownership to the customer. The principle is close to conventional leasing, with a sharia-compliant structure and rentals agreed in advance.

Leasing in neighbouring markets

Car leasing in Morocco is widely used by individuals. In Egypt, it remains mainly a business tool, linked to the business loan in Egypt and to the needs of Egyptian SMEs for equipment and commercial vehicles.

Contract length and residual value

Contracts usually run for several years, with a higher first rental and a residual value payable to exercise the option. A large initial rental lowers the monthly payments, which suits companies that have cash available at the outset.

End of contract and returning the vehicle

At maturity, the lessee buys the vehicle at its residual value, returns it or renews the contract on a new model. The leasing company inspects the vehicle and charges for any damage beyond normal wear and tear.

Leasing electric vehicles

With charging points spreading in Cairo and the new cities, a few leasing companies now finance electric vehicles. This segment remains small, but it appeals to companies looking to cut their fuel bills.

Setting up a vehicle lease in Egypt

  1. Define the model, the business use and the number of vehicles, then request quotes from several FRA-licensed companies.
  2. Compare the first rental, monthly rentals, residual value, insurance and included services for each offer received.
  3. Send the commercial register, tax card, financial statements and bank statements for the risk assessment.
  4. Sign the contract, pay the first rental and let the lessor enter the transaction in the leasing register.
  5. Take delivery of the vehicle registered in the lessor's name and meet the insurance and maintenance obligations.
  6. At maturity, exercise the purchase option, return the vehicle or negotiate a new contract.

Documents for a leasing application in Egypt

  • Company commercial register and tax card
  • National ID cards of the signing directors
  • Financial statements for the last two financial years
  • Business account bank statements
  • Dealer pro forma for each vehicle
  • Salary certificate and statements for an individual
Mistakes to avoid in an Egyptian lease contract
  • Overlooking the residual value and discovering at the end of the contract a purchase price that is high compared with the used car market.
  • Signing with a company not entered in the FRA register, which deprives the business of the protections set out in Law 176 of 2018.
  • Selling or lending the leased vehicle to a third party without consent, when it legally remains the lessor's property.
  • Failing to compare leasing with a standard loan that also carries a tax benefit, by looking only at the monthly rental.

Car leasing in Egypt: practical points

Can an individual lease a car in Egypt?

Yes, some leasing companies accept individuals with sufficient, documented income. The range of offers is narrower than for businesses, however, and a bank car loan is often simpler for a salaried household.

Who pays traffic fines and the vehicle licence?

The lessee generally covers fines, licence renewal and compulsory insurance, even though the vehicle is registered in the lessor's name. The contract sets out exactly how these costs are shared between the parties.

Can you end a lease before maturity?

Early termination is possible under the terms of the contract, but it usually means paying compensation covering all or part of the remaining rentals. It is worth negotiating these conditions before signing.

Is leasing compatible with Islamic finance?

The ijara muntahia bittamleek offered by Egyptian Islamic banks serves the same purpose as a financial lease. Rentals are fixed in advance and ownership passes to the customer at the end of the contract.
