Bank cards with credit in Niger: offers and conditions

In Niger, a genuine deferred-debit credit card remains rare and reserved for wealthier customers. Most banks offer Visa or GIM-UEMOA debit or prepaid cards, sometimes combined with an authorised overdraft linked to the salary.

Bank cards with credit in Niger: offers and conditions

Limited revolving credit on offer in Niger

Banks in Niger such as Sonibank, Ecobank and BOA-Niger mainly issue debit cards linked to the account. Revolving or deferred-debit credit cards are granted case by case, mostly to executives and business owners in Niamey.

Debit, deferred debit, prepaid: the differences

A debit card takes money from the account immediately. A prepaid card works on a balance loaded in advance, with no current account. Only a credit card actually advances money, which is then repaid with interest subject to a ceiling.

The GIM-UEMOA network in Niger

The Groupement Interbancaire Monétique de l'UEMOA connects the cash machines and payment terminals of banks across the zone. A GIM-UEMOA card issued in Niamey can therefore be used in the other Union countries, with fees set by the issuer.

Prepaid Visa cards for Nigerien travellers

For online purchases or trips to Morocco, France or Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage, many Nigeriens use a prepaid Visa card. Top-up fees and foreign currency conversion charges add to the total cost of using it.

Authorised overdraft on a salary account

An overdraft linked to a debit card is the most common form of credit for employees with a domiciled salary. Its rate is subject to the 14% bank ceiling, and it differs from a true personal loan in Niger repaid in instalments.

Usury cap and card fees in Niger

Since 1 June 2026, interest and commissions on bank credit in Niger must not exceed 14% a year. The annual card fee, charges for withdrawals outside the network and currency conversion commissions still need to be compared.

Conditions for getting a credit card in Niger

The bank usually requires a long-standing account, a high domiciled salary or substantial deposits, sometimes a pledge. The spending limit depends on these factors and may be reviewed after checking your history with Creditinfo VoLo.

Mobile money rather than cards

In shops in Niamey, Maradi or Agadez, paying by Airtel Money or the Moov Africa wallet is often more widespread than paying by card. Some banks even link accounts and wallets to make transfers between them easier.

Card security and fraud in Niger

Data theft at cash machines and fake messages asking for the code received by SMS exist in Niger as elsewhere. No bank will ever ask for your PIN; if your card is lost, block it immediately through your branch.

Cards in Islamic finance

Banque Islamique du Niger offers card payment services consistent with its principles, without interest-bearing revolving credit. Financing needs are then met through contracts such as murabaha rather than through an overdraft facility.

Comparison with Mali

In Mali, credit cards are equally rare and the GIM-UEMOA network plays the same role, as explained in our guide to the credit card in Mali. For other forms of financing, see our overview of credit in Niger.

Late payments and their consequences

An unpaid card balance or an exceeded overdraft is reported as an incident. It can lead to the card being blocked, penalties and a record visible in Creditinfo VoLo when you next apply for a loan.
