Paying and borrowing by bank card in the Comorian archipelago

In the Comoros, a true deferred-debit credit card is rare. Banks mainly issue debit cards, international or not depending on the institution, while revolving credit usually takes the form of an authorised overdraft on a domiciled salary.

Few genuine credit cards

In the archipelago, the credit card, which provides a reserve of money repaid later, remains a niche product. Most customers of AFG Bank Comores, Exim Bank Comores or BFC hold a debit card linked to their current account instead.

Debit cards and cash machine withdrawals

A debit card is mainly used to withdraw Comorian francs from cash machines, found mostly in Moroni and the main towns. Each transaction is debited immediately, with no credit, up to the available balance or the overdraft granted.

The overdraft as local revolving credit

For an employee whose salary is domiciled, the authorised overdraft acts as revolving credit. Its limit is set according to salary, and interest runs on the days the account is overdrawn; SNPSF also offers this kind of advance to government employees.

International cards for travel

Comorians travelling to France, Madagascar or the Gulf need a card accepted abroad. Depending on the bank, an international card may be offered, with an annual fee and commission charged on each payment made outside the archipelago.

Paying at Comorian shops

Few shops in Moroni, Mutsamudu or Fomboni have card terminals. Hotels, supermarkets and some large retailers accept cards, but most everyday purchases are still paid in cash or with mobile money wallets.

Huri Money, MVola and Holo as alternatives

The mobile wallets run by Comores Telecom, Telma and BDC let users pay, transfer and receive money without a card. They do not give access to conventional revolving credit, but they replace the card for many everyday expenses.

Fixed peg and payments in euros

Thanks to the fixed rate of 491.96775 Comorian francs per euro, a purchase paid in France is not exposed to exchange-rate swings. The bank still charges a commission on the transaction, which you should check in its fee schedule.

How to qualify for a Comorian card

The bank requires a funded current account, often fed by a domiciled salary, and checks the customer's history. For a card with a payment facility, the limit depends on income and on having no incidents reported to the BCC central risk register.

Card fraud and fake bank agent calls

Data theft during online purchases and fake messages asking for the PIN or security code also occur in the Comoros. A bank never asks for these details by phone; if in doubt, have the card blocked through your branch.

Card or personal loan for a big purchase

To pay for expensive equipment, an overdraft or a card often costs more than an instalment loan. Our guide to consumer loans in the Comoros details this fixed-term financing, which is usually better suited to a large expense.

Paying for a vehicle by card: best avoided

Some buyers pay a deposit on an imported car with their international card. For the balance, Comorian car finance offers a clearer term and rate than a prolonged overdraft, which often proves costly for the cardholder.

Comparison with Djibouti

Djibouti, another small banking market in the region, also has limited credit card use. Our credit card guide for Djibouti lets you compare fees, international cards and the role played by mobile payments there.

Getting a card from a Comorian bank

  1. Open a current account with AFG Bank, Exim Bank, BFC or BDC and have your pay credited to it.
  2. Ask for the list of available cards, domestic or international, with their annual fees.
  3. If needed, request an authorised overdraft, specifying its limit and interest rate.
  4. Sign the card agreement and collect the card and PIN at the branch.
  5. Turn on balance alerts and check every transaction on your monthly statement.

  • National identity card or passport
  • Proof of address
  • Payslips or proof of regular income
  • Salary domiciliation certificate for an overdraft
  • Signed account agreement
Misusing bank cards in the Comoros
  • Staying permanently overdrawn for months, which turns an occasional facility into expensive debt and can lead to the card being withdrawn.
  • Giving your PIN or security code to someone claiming to be a bank agent by phone or message.
  • Travelling abroad with a domestic-only card and finding yourself with no means of payment in Paris or Dubai.
  • Ignoring commissions on payments made outside the Comoros and finding large accumulated charges on your statement.

Comorian credit cards: your questions answered

Can you get a real credit card in the Comoros?

Some banks offer one to customers with high and regular income, but supply is limited. Most cardholders actually have a debit card combined with an authorised overdraft, which should be checked in the agreement signed with the bank.

Does a Comorian card work in Mayotte and France?

An international card can be used in Mayotte and mainland France to pay or withdraw cash. A card restricted to the local network does not work outside the archipelago, so check its category with your bank before you travel.

Can Huri Money or MVola replace a bank card?

For local payments and transfers between islands, Huri Money, MVola or Holo are often more practical than a card. They cannot be used for purchases on foreign websites, however, for which an international card is still needed.

What should you do if your card is stolen in Moroni?

Tell the issuing bank immediately so it can block the card, then report the theft to the authorities. Fraudulent transactions reported quickly are easier to dispute with the bank, so keep your branch's number close at hand.
