Ivorian consumer credit: borrowing against your salary

The Ivorian personal loan is unsecured credit repaid by debit from a domiciled salary, which Abidjan banks mainly grant to civil servants and employees on permanent contracts, within their attachable share of salary and the 14% usury rate.

Ivorian consumer credit: borrowing against your salary

Salary loans, the backbone of Ivorian household credit

In Côte d’Ivoire, most loans to individuals are personal loans backed by pay. Year-end celebrations, funerals, home improvements or household equipment drive these requests, which banks process quickly when the salary is already domiciled with them.

Irrevocable domiciliation: the main guarantee

The employer signs a certificate committing to pay the salary into the account opened at the lending bank until the loan is repaid. For a public employee, the Ivorian Treasury plays this role, which explains the offers designed for civil servants.

Attachable share of salary and debt ratio

Ivorian banks generally limit total repayments to about one third of net income, with variations depending on salary level. Advances already granted by the employer or loans from professional mutual societies are deducted from this capacity.

Loan buy-outs between Ivorian banks

An employee can move their domiciliation to another bank that buys out the outstanding loan and grants an extra amount. This practice, common in Abidjan, means paying any early repayment charges set out in the original contract.

What a personal loan in FCFA really costs

On top of the nominal rate come arrangement fees, death and disability insurance and the tax on bank operations charged on interest. Since June 2026, the total must not exceed 14% a year for credit granted by a bank.

Banks, financial institutions and microfinance

SGCI, SIB, Ecobank, Bridge Bank, Coris Bank and Orabank lend to employees, while Cofina and Crédit Access also target self-employed workers. The latter may charge higher rates, within the 24% allowed outside the banking sector.

Personal loans for CNPS and CGRAE retirees

Pensioners whose pension is domiciled can also borrow, but over shorter terms and with more expensive insurance. Detailed conditions are on our page about loans for Ivorian retirees, including the role of the pension fund.

Authorised overdraft and cash facilities

Some banks grant an overdraft equal to a fraction of salary, useful at month end. This revolving credit costs more than an amortising loan and is often linked to a bank card described in our section on credit cards in Côte d’Ivoire.

Mobile micro-loans: a top-up or a trap?

The Tik Tak loan from Orange Bank Africa and other offers linked to mobile wallets help out with small sums. Yet stacking these short loans alongside a bank loan cuts disposable income and can lead to arrears reported to Creditinfo VoLo.

Comparing with consumer credit in Ghana

Across the border, personal loans are denominated in cedi and are not subject to the WAMU usury rate. The guide to personal loans in Ghana describes that system, useful for border residents of Abengourou or Bondoukou.

Early repayment and changing employer

If you resign or are transferred, the domiciliation must be moved, otherwise the bank can demand immediate repayment. It is wise to inform your adviser before any change of job or bank, so that the arrangement can be adapted.

When salary is irregular or undeclared

Traders and informal workers in Abidjan rarely obtain a bank personal loan. They turn instead to microfinance, tontines or savings and credit mutuals, with smaller amounts and collective guarantees, often within groups of traders from the same market.

Applying for a personal loan at an Ivorian bank

  1. Work out your available capacity by adding up all current repayments, including salary advances.
  2. Compare your bank’s effective rate and arrangement fees with a competing bank willing to buy out the loan.
  3. Have the irrevocable domiciliation certificate signed by the HR department or the Public Treasury.
  4. Fill in the form, sign the Creditinfo VoLo authorisation and join the borrower insurance scheme.
  5. Receive the funds in your account, usually a few days after approval, then follow the monthly debits.

The Ivorian personal loan in questions

How long does it take to get a personal loan in Abidjan?

For a customer whose salary is already domiciled, approval can come within a few days. A new customer must first open an account, move the domiciliation and sometimes wait for one or two salary payments before the bank processes the request.

Can I borrow from a bank where I am not a customer?

Yes, but the bank will almost always require your salary domiciliation to be moved to it. It can then buy out the current loan at your old bank and pay you an extra amount, depending on your available capacity.

Can self-employed workers get a personal loan?

Rarely from banks, since they have no domiciled income. Microfinance institutions such as Cofina or Crédit Access look instead at actual business activity, mobile statements and a guarantor, for more modest amounts and shorter terms.

What happens if I move my salary to another bank?

Because the domiciliation is irrevocable, the employer must not change it without the lender’s consent. A unilateral transfer can make the remaining principal immediately payable and lead to a report in the credit information bureau’s file.
